Recovering from Neon Genesis Evangelion

I'm honestly not even sure where to begin with this...

So, Neon Genesis Evangelion has returned to NETFLIX and folks are up in arms about the re-dubbed characters. Heather and I on the other hand have been slowly making our way through the box-set I purchased from an old job and boy, let me tell you, we're lost.

For those who haven't watched it, and without spoiling everything, Neon Genesis is the story of Shinji Ikari, a young boy lost in a world that has been tormented by devastating creatures known as "Angels". After being contacted by his father, long left behind in Shinji's life, he is brought into the NERV facility to pilot a massive mecha known as Evangelion Unit-01. It's here that we start to meet a menagerie of characters that interact with Shinji in both his "work" and school lives as he battles against each new "Angel" that appears in Tokyo-3.

Now, there's A LOT of other things that go on that I won't even begin to talk about because it would spoil a lot of the story, but I just have to ask everyone like....WHAT IN THE NINE HELLS? It certainly stands out as an anime, but there's so much that happened in the last few episodes that I'm completely at a loss for words. Heather and I have been told that we now need to watch the films that were released in order to understand what happened in the last few episodes, but I still feel like I'm going to fall down a deeper rabbit hole of not understanding the show.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching this and I would recommend it to anyone out there looking for a good Mecha-Anime that doesn't follow the rest of the crowd when it comes to plot and character development. A fair warning though that there are quite a handful of uncomfortable scenes scattered throughout the series that had the two of us looking away from the screen!
